$10,000 grant to develop a new open-access textbook

We are pleased to announce that Professor Jean-Philippe Berteau has been awarded a $10,000 grant through the CUNY Open Educational Resources (OER) initiative to develop a new open-access textbook titled Evidence-Based Practice and Artificial Intelligence in Rehabilitation Science.

This project will build on Professor Berteau’s ongoing work at the intersection of data-driven clinical reasoning, rehabilitation technology, and AI-enhanced decision-making. The textbook will be Creative Commons–licensed and hosted on CUNY Academic Works, ensuring free and permanent access to students, educators, and researchers across disciplines.

The forthcoming volume will serve as both a pedagogical and conceptual framework, bridging the principles of evidence-based practice with the growing influence of machine learning and computational methods in clinical rehabilitation sciences. It aims to foster a deeper understanding of how artificial intelligence can support critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and improved patient outcomes.

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of Library Services at the College of Staten Island will provide institutional support throughout the project, with publication expected in Summer 2026.

“This project represents a new phase in how rehabilitation professionals engage with knowledge — not just consuming data, but learning to interpret, question, and apply it critically through intelligent systems,” said Professor Berteau.

Stay tuned for updates as BerteauLab advances the development of this open resource for the rehabilitation science community.
